Try, if you can, to think of the world as a huge dark room in which people have been gathered together. Into this room a single candle has been lit. Naturally the people who can see the light of the candle will move together, gathering around the only light.

Now into this thought add the fact that each person is carrying a candle of their own, all unlit. As they gather around the first candle they are able to light their own. As more candles are lit more people will be able to see the warm light and will come forward.

The first candle, that would be Jesus. He came into a dark world and brought light. Those who first gathered to him each lit their own candles then went out into the rest of the world to share the light, and to spread it.

As Christians we are not called into the light simply to bask in its warmth. If we just hang out in the light then how can others see it? How can others know that there is another way other then to simply live in the darkness of the world? The answer is, they can’t know. They can’t know to come to the light unless they can see the light!

This is why we need to take the light of Jesus into our world, move out into the darkness so that more will see the light and come to know the Light of the world.

I had just finished writing and uploading a scene, and got to thinking about the sermon this came from.  "You are the light of the world.  Who puts their light under a basket?"
