Hand in hand they ran
A boy and his twin sister
Around them the spring light
If clear and warm and bright
Streaming freely through budding trees
They can not imagine any other life
This is the springtime of their lives
Falling rains and swirling winds
Singing birds and laughing brooks
Around them life is young and bright
And autumn’s chill is far away.
He had enlisted to protect his country
He hopes to find honor on the field of battle
He promises to return before snow fall.
She has fallen in love with a young soldier
They walk together under a green canopy
And make secret vows to one another
Here is the warm glad summer of their lives.
Falling rains and driving winds
Singing birds and yapping wolves
Around them the world’s full of promise
And autumn’s chill is far away
The times have changed, fall has come
They found only death in the French trenches.
Her beloved and her twin brother are gone,
She hears the news, she sees the list
In grief she runs alone to the forest pond
With no regard for her gown of white,
She sits alone in the autumn of her life
Falling leaves and biting winds
She cries out her pain to the forest
All around is the filtered, golden light
Now filled only with autumn’s deathly chill
